A gap equal to or more than 0.5 mm between any two teeth needs attention asap. This condition is medically known as diastema and this condition can appear both in children and adults. The gaps mostly are visible in the mouth of children and once the permanent teeth appear, the gaps fill on their own. Also, there is no health hazard related to diastema. Thus, it might not be compulsory to get this condition diagnosed.
But it has a cosmetic drawback as well if it is visible to others. If you do not like your appearance due to diastema, you can get it treated with the help of the kid’s orthodontics in Seattle. There are several treatments available like braces and Invisalign. Let us explore more here on diastema.
Causes of diastema
Apart from being a genetic disorder, the condition can pop up due to the following reasons:
1. Gum disease:-
You can look at the gaps in your teeth if you have severe gum disease because this disease triggers multiple reactions in your jawbone. These diseases can become the cause of the overgrowth of gum tissues, which creates a gap between the teeth eventually.
2. Tooth size & growth disparities:-
Abnormal growth of your teeth or missing teeth and dissimilarities in teeth size due to oversized labial frenum can lead to midline diastema. This Frenum is a tissue connecting gum tissue with the inside of the lips. It also surrounds the central incisors. In such conditions, your orthodontist may suggest a procedure called a frenectomy.
3. Temporary diastemas:-
If the baby tooth is lost suddenly due to any injury or accident, it can cause temporary diastemas in the mouth. These gaps will not remain once the permanent teeth set in. Most of these gaps go away when permanent teeth appear.
Besides the gaps in the teeth, there are other indications of diastema. If you have this condition in the mouth, you might feel some of your teeth getting loose with some discomfort and pain. This pain might aggravate while eating. Some other signs that you notice are swollen, receding, bright red, or tender bleeding gums. Bad breath can also trigger due to diastema.
Genetic diastema is not preventable because it came with you in this world. Although the kids’ orthodontist in Seattle will suggest measures that will minimize the gaps between the teeth. For example, you can work on their thumb-sucking habits or teach them swallowing reflexes, good oral hygiene, and so on.
